Some beautiful evening light shining on our living room wall. To me, the golden sunset light that shines in the evening is like a reward for making it through another day.

One evening I was walking at a park with my husband and this little clump of grass growing through the crack in the sidewalk caught my attention and seemed to tell me an encouraging story.

This is from the second of two rolls of expired film given to me. I shot this roll of Fuji Superia xtra 400 (expired in 2014) just for fun at a local state park back on 4/4/2021 with my Nikon FE and 35mm f/2. I developed this roll at home, “scanned” it with my DSLR and converted the negatives to positives using Negative Lab Pro. It was a nice and refreshing experience to just shoot this roll for fun, to notice my surroundings and try to capture whatever caught my eye (not knowing how it might turn out since it was expired and prepare myself that if it was a “complete loss” it wouldn’t be the end of the world–at least I enjoyed the shooting experience). The developing and scanning process helped me to continue to grow in film photography and as a person as well. I’m thankful for what I’ve learned and for the many kind and gifted people in the film community who have shared their images and encouraged and inspired me to keep shooting film and learning. I can see a positive change in my view of my photos and that seems to match how I am changing as a person over time—less critical of myself and my photos, open to learning and growing as a person and a photographer, and more open to the beautiful imperfections both in myself and in my photos.

My viola that I’ve had for about 22 years. I am thankful for the joy I feel when playing this instrument. Just looking at it reminds me how helpful it’s been to have the opportunity to play viola. I’m thankful that my small school—the only small school its size in our whole state to have an orchestra program—had a wonderful orchestra teacher who was also a family friend. This image is a reminder for me to get back to playing every once in a while when I can as I haven’t taken the time or had much energy for playing viola for quite some time.

Both the darkness and light exist at the same time. It’s ok to recognize both—often times, invalidation does not help and can cause harm. Both the darkness and light exist at the same time.

Just a quick shot I took out my window as my husband was driving 75+ miles per hour down the Kansas Turnpike through the Flint Hills (my favorite part of the 8 hour drive) a few months ago. Taking photos while riding in the car is quite an interesting practice—you never know what you’ll get or how an image might turn out as you’re moving down the road. And I find that often it’s a helpful way for me to cope and have something to focus on. Sometimes I take my camera in the car when we go places—have been doing this a lot less as I’ve been facing some very intense struggles so I often don’t feel up to taking a camera and usually don’t go many places. When we travel this far/out of state I make sure to at least bring my camera with me. I know this photo would be considered a technical failure but I thought the dirt on the window highlighted by the setting sunlight added an interesting element to the image. I find that while I crave perfection in my images I mainly just take photos “for fun” and often enjoy happy accidents like this one.
